Curious About Racing? Here’s How to Approach Bike Fest
For many riders, signing up for a race feels like a bigger step than the ride itself.
It is one thing to meet a friend for a weekend loop, head out for a familiar trail ride, or spend a few hours exploring gravel roads at your own pace. It is another thing to register for an event, show up at check-in, look around at other riders, and wonder whether you belong there.
At Trail Hub, we believe the answer is yes.
Bike Fest was created to bring riders together in a way that feels exciting, welcoming, and rooted in the wider cycling community. Taking place on Sunday, July 5, Bike Fest combines the Ontario Enduro Series opening round, Gravel Fondo routes, a Gravel Social Ride, a Festival & Expo Village, food, drinks, and a full day of connection on and off the bike.
For experienced racers, it is a chance to line up, test themselves, and be part of a high-energy day at Trail Hub. For newer riders, it is a chance to try something different, set a personal goal, and experience the atmosphere of a cycling event without feeling like the day has to be about podiums, pressure, or perfection.
If you have been curious about racing but have not quite talked yourself into it yet, Bike Fest may be the right place to begin.
What “Racing” Really Means at Bike Fest
When people hear the word race, it can be easy to picture the most intense version of it.
The fastest riders. The most dialed-in gear. The serious start-line faces. But racing does not have to mean chasing a podium.
For many riders, especially first-time participants, racing simply means choosing a challenge and showing up for it. It can mean riding a marked course instead of planning your own route. It can mean learning how an event day flows. It can mean riding with other people around you, finding your rhythm, and discovering that you are more capable than you thought.
At Bike Fest, there is room for all of that.
Choose the Right Event for Your First Race
One of the best things about Bike Fest is that there is more than one way to take part. You do not need to force yourself into the most competitive option if that is not the experience you want.
If you are a mountain biker who enjoys technical riding and the energy of a race format, the MTB Enduro may be the right fit. Enduro racing is built around timed downhill stages connected by untimed transitions, which means riders are not racing every single pedal stroke of the day. It rewards skill, control, strategy, and the ability to stay focused across multiple stages.
For riders looking for a longer challenge, the Enduro Long Course is expected to be upwards of 40 km. For those who want a shorter or more approachable mountain bike option, the Enduro Short Course is expected to be around 20 km.
If you are more drawn to open roads, steady pacing, and a longer day in the saddle, the Gravel Fondo offers a different kind of challenge. The long course is currently expected to be approximately 113 km, while the short course will likely be under 65 km. Riders can choose the distance that feels right for their fitness, experience, and goals.
And if you are interested in being part of Bike Fest but do not want the pressure of timing or podiums, the Gravel Social Ride is a strong place to start. It offers a more relaxed, non-competitive option for riders who want the route, the community, and the event-day atmosphere without making the day feel like a race against the clock.
Ready to choose your event?

You Do Not Need to Be the Fastest Person There
This might be the most important thing to remember. You do not need to be the fastest person at Bike Fest to belong at Bike Fest. You just need to choose the experience that fits you, prepare as best you can, and come into the day with a positive attitude.
For a first-time racer, that goal might be finishing with a smile. It might be staying calm through each stage. It might be pacing well, eating enough, riding safely, or simply learning how an event like this works. It might be signing up with a friend and making the whole day feel like an adventure rather than a test.
The goal does not have to impress anyone else. It just has to mean something to you.

What to Expect When You Arrive
For newer riders, the unknowns around race day can feel bigger than the ride itself.
Bike Fest is designed to be organized, welcoming, and easy to navigate. Riders should plan to arrive early, giving themselves enough time to park, check in, get organized, warm up, and find where they need to be before their start. Event signage and staff will help guide people on site, and final timing details will be shared with registered riders closer to the event date.
Pack the Basics, Then Keep It Simple
Preparing for your first event does not need to become a gear spiral.
Bring your bike, helmet, water, and the riding gear you know you are comfortable in. Check the weather, pack layers, and bring anything you will want before or after the ride. A change of clothes, sunscreen, gloves, eyewear, and a post-ride layer can make the day feel a lot smoother.
And if something does come up, the Trail Hub Bike Shop will be open throughout the event for quick repairs, adjustments, parts, and guidance.

Stay for the Post-Ride Energy
One of the best parts of Bike Fest will happen after the ride.
Because Bike Fest is not only about crossing a finish line. It is about being part of a day that brings the many sides of cycling together.
The Festival & Expo Village will bring together a growing list of vendors and cycling brands, with confirmed participants including Skratch Labs, Bateman’s Bicycle Company, Anderson Bicycle, Costco, Xact Nutrition, Peppermint Cycling, and more. It is a chance to explore gear, connect with brands, meet other riders, and make the day feel bigger than the route itself.
Make This the Year You Try
If you have been waiting until you feel completely ready, you may be waiting longer than you need to.
For first-time racers, it is a chance to step into the event atmosphere with support, options, and a community around you.
For experienced riders, it is a chance to line up, push the pace, and be part of a new cycling event at Trail Hub.
For everyone, it is a day built around the shared love of riding.
So if part of you has been thinking, “I want to, but I’m not sure,” this might be your sign to choose your event, invite your crew, and make Bike Fest part of your summer riding calendar.
Registration closes Friday, July 3 at 6 pm, and day-of registration will not be available.
